Homemade Play-dough

1 c flour
1/2 c salt
1 tsp. cream of tartar
1 T salad oil
1-1/4 c water
food coloring

Mix together until smooth and cook on medium heat
until thick and not sticky. I use an electric skillet and
a whisk to make this in the classroom with the children.
We make a different color each month. They actually
prefer homemade play-dough over the store bought.
(This recipe can easily be doubled.)
Apple
Play-dough:
Use red food coloring and substitute the water with apple
juice. Add cinnamon and ground nutmeg.
Smells like apple pie!
Pumpkin
Play-dough:
Use orange food coloring and add pumpkin pie spice.
Smells like Fall should smell!
Peppermint
Play-dough:
Use red or green food coloring and add 1-2 tsp. of
Peppermint Extract. Smells divine!
Play-dough
"Ice":
Make original recipe and add lots of white glitter.
Have children press play dough into plastic ice cube
trays. Pop out of the trays and stack to build icy igloos.
Rainbow
Flavored Play-dough:
Add favorite flavored Kool-Aid packages to original recipe.
It colors the play-dough and smells so sweet!
